Side Effects / Efectos secundarios: Vol. II (Dec. 2020)
(ES) Side Effects / Efectos secundarios es una serie de exhibiciones que nace de la colaboración entre i21 espacio de proyectos en Mexicali, México y Steppling Gallery at San Diego State University en Calexico, CA. Como muchos otros, i21 y Steppling Gallery sintieron la necesidad de continuar su programación mientras que sus espacios físicos permanecen cerrados debido a la pandemia, y, decidieron unir fuerzas para crear esta iniciativa binacional. La serie Side Effects / Efectos secundarios consistió en cuatro exhibiciones, cada una con los subtítulos Volumen I, II, III y IV e invitaó a artistas de ambos lados de la frontera México/Estados Unidos a participar con obra que se presentó en esta plataforma digital.
Nueve meses después de la pandemia, Side Effects / Efectos Secundarios, Volumen II presenta obras que exponen inadvertidamente el deseo, el anhelo y la necesidad de moverse y viajar, dar un paseo, comprometerse con el mundo exterior y dar paseos más allá de nuestras restricciones durante el confinamiento. Estos proyectos apuntan al aire libre, la comunidad y la esfera pública, pero a diferencia de las prácticas socialmente comprometidas, todos fueron realizados por artistas individuales y solitarios. Esta actuación sola no es infrecuente dentro de la comunidad creativa, pero ahora refleja el de facto modus operandi de los individuos transitando el espacio público. Al menos así es como todos deberíamos comportarnos hasta que termine la pandemia; sin embargo, el aumento previsto de casos de COVID-19 durante los meses de vacaciones y el desafío a las recomendaciones de los funcionarios de salud cuenta una historia diferente. Pero es precisamente este anhelo colectivo de movilidad, de interacción social y encuentros, el impulso de reunir, actuar sobre el espacio público, alterarlo, adueñarse de él documentándolo y transformarlo que subyace en las seis obras presentadas en el Volumen II de Efectos Secundarios.
(EN) Side Effects / Efectos secundarios is a series of exhibitions that is born out of a collaboration between I21 espacio de proyectos in Mexicali, Mexico and Steppling Gallery at San Diego State University in Calexico, CA. Like many others, I21 and Steppling Gallery felt the need to continue doing programming while their brick-and-mortar locations remain closed due to the pandemic, and they decided to join forces to create this binational effort. The series Side Effects / Efectos secundarios will consist of four exhibitions each with the subtitles Volume I, II, III and IV and will invite artists from both sides of the U.S./Mexico border to participate with work to be presented on this digital platform.
Nine months into the pandemic, Side Effects / Efectos Secundarios, Volume II presents works that inadvertently expose one’s desire, longing and need to move around and travel, to take a stroll, to engage with the outside world and to go for walks beyond our restricted spaces while in confinement. These projects point to the outdoors, community and the public sphere, yet different to socially engaged practices, they were all done by individual, solitary artists. And this acting alone is not all uncommon within the creative community, but it now reflects the de facto modus operandi of individuals moving through public space. Or at least this is how we should all behave until the pandemic ends; however, the predicted surge of COVID-19 cases during the holiday months as a result of the public's fatigue and defiance of the health officials’ recommendations tell a different story. But it is precisely this collective yearn for mobility, for social interaction and encounters, the urge to gather, to act upon the public space, to alter it, to own it by documenting it and to transform it that runs as an under current in the six works presented in Side Effects, Volume II.
